The attack took place in the town on Baga, near Lake Chad. The military station, a key multinational base, was comprised of troops from Nigeria and neighboring Niger, Chad and Cameroon although only the Nigerian troops were stationed there.
Nigerian forces exchanged heavy gunfire with Boko Haram fighters, but were forced to abandon the camp.
Residents of Baga were sent fleeing while the militants began a killing spree before setting the town ablaze.
“Yesterday at around 05:00 we were woken up by heavy gunshots, and we couldn’t identify where the shots were coming from,” an unnamed resident told the BBC.
Many hid in bushes while others escaped to neighboring countries by boat.
Suspected Boko Haram militants have also been accused of conducting another raid last Friday in a remote village where at least 40 young boys and men were kidnapped.
